چکیده

A simple one-dimensional model of Maxwellian injection into a cylindrical Penning–Malmberg trap is presented. This model is used to predict the radial density profile of an electron column produced by a biased cathode with an r potential variation. The column density n(r) is assumed to depend upon the cathode potential voltage Vk(r) and the self-consistent space-charge potential f(r) as n(r)}exp$e@f(r)2Vk(r)#/T%. A one-parameter family of theoretical solutions describes the radial density profiles. The model’s predictions agree well with electron density profiles resulting from a spiral tungsten filament measured over a wide range in cathode voltages. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-664X~98!00805-2#

In-FEEP Thruster Ion Beam Neutralization with Thermionic and Field Emission Cathodes

Charge neutralization of an In-FEEP thruster was demonstrated with three different electron sources by zeroing the floating potential of the thruster and neutralizer system. The three cathodes used in the investigation include a mixed metal thermionic cathode, a carbon nanotube field emission cathode, and a Spindt-type Mo field emission array cathode. The field emission cathodes significantly i...

DISTORTION OF PLASMA DUE TO INSTALLATION OF AN ORIFICE IN HELIUM DISCHARGE POSITIVE COLUMN

Complicated potential structure formed at a constriction of positive column of a DC discharge with heated cathode in He at low discharge currents is investigated. According to the potential structure, electrons and ions are accelerated by the electric field and their energy distribution functions acquire multi humped shapes. Additional maximums on distribution functions quickly disappear due to...

Comparison of Discharge Plasma Parameters in a 30-cm NSTAR Type Ion Engine with and without Beam Extraction

Double Langmuir probe measurements are presented over a two-dimensional array of locations in the near Discharge Cathode Assembly (DCA) region of a 30-cm diameter ring cusp ion thruster. Discharge plasma data taken with and without beam extraction exhibit a broadening of the high on-axis electron temperature region when a beam is extracted. Electron number density and temperature contours are p...

Direct Measurements of Plasma Properties nearby a Hollow Cathode Using a High Speed Electrostatic Probe

A method is described for mapping the plasma parameters nearby a hollow cathode using a high speed positioning system and a segment-shielded electrostatic probe. Contour maps of plasma density, plasma potential, and electron temperature are presented for wide ranges of discharge current (2 20 A) and xenon flow rate (1.5 – 4.5 sccm). The contour maps are constructed from the analysis of 320 I-V ...

Plasma Potential Measurements in the Discharge Channel of a 6-kW Hall Thruster

In an effort to understand the role of neutral flow dynamics in the operation of Hall thrusters, a floating emissive probe was used to measure the plasma potential, electric field, and electron temperature in the discharge channel of a 6-kW Hall thruster operating at 300 V and anode flow rates of 10, 20, and 30 mg/s. To isolate the effect of propellant flow rate, the cathode flow fraction and m...
